Om Jai Gange Mata, Maiya Jai Gange Mata,
Jo nar tumko dhyata, manvanshit phal pata,
Om Jai Gange Mata…
Last week I was at Haridwar to attend the Ganga Aarti at the Har-ki-Pauri ghat. I had attended it multiple times earlier, but this time it seemed special. I had an experience I had never had before. Maybe because I saw it closely and learn some unusual lessons. As a Career Coach, I would like to relate to career breakthroughs.
So here’s what I learned from my observations and what you can learn too from the Ganga Aarti at Haridwar, which will help you make your career special by achieving grand breakthroughs–
#1–In the right place at the right time
Usually, people start flocking the Har-ki-Pauri ghat from 5 pm or earlier to ensure they get the best seat to view the aarti. Some cross over to the other side from where they can get the best view, some try to seize the place closest to where the pundits perform the aarti and so on…
We had reached just before 7 pm. As per the norm, we were late, but at the right time for the aarti. We were quick on our feet, made our way through the crowd, and soon found ourselves at the Ganga Mandir. We descended a few steps. We were at the place where we got the best view of the aarti. We were in the right place at the right time. It was an experience of a lifetime.
To have breakthroughs in your career too, you need to be at the right place at the right time. Some people call it being lucky, but this luck can be ascribed to the collective influence of 3 very simple performs which you can do easily–
- Adjacency–To catch fish you need to be near the water, right? People who are lucky are always near the water. They attempt to be as near to the opportunities as possible. If you wish to be at the right place at the right time, you need to identify the areas in which you want more opportunities and be as close to it as possible so you can grasp the sudden opportunities.
- Action–You can never catch the fish at the very first go, isn’t it? People who are lucky practice until they master the art of fishing. To be at the right place at the right time, you need to practice as much as possible so you can give your best shot when the opportunity strikes.
- Consistency–Once you catch a fish, is it guaranteed you will catch a fish every time you go fishing? Well, people who are lucky guarantee it by fishing often. To be at the right place at the right time, you need to constantly practice doing the things you want to be lucky in.
#2–Find your way through the crowd
It was crowded when we reached the ghat. We waded through the crowd to find ourselves a place from where we got the best view of the aarti. It wasn’t easy. We were pushed, pulled, shouted at, and a lot more…! But we persisted. We ensured we got the place that we wanted to stand.
To ensure you have the desired career breakthroughs, you need to find your way through the crowd. Identify what you really want and work towards it. There will be people pulling you back, telling you it won’t work, discouraging you, not appreciating your work, and so on. Ignore them. Focus on what your goal is. Take steps to achieve it.
#3–Invoke the 5 elements
During the aarti, they invoke the 5 elements of nature – Water (River Ganga), Earth (the soil on which we stand), Fire (the flames of the lamp), Air around, and the Sky above. It creates the most perfect setting to exhilarate everyone.
To ensure you have the desired career breakthroughs, you need to ensure your career takes care of the other elements of life too–your finances, health, relationships, personal development, and leisure. If these are in sync, only then will you be able to focus on the breakthroughs you desire. These play an important role in your life.
#4–Always be selling
Before, during, and even after the aarti, there were people selling something or the other. Some sold small flower baskets, some sold the tickets for a special pooja/donation and then there were others who asked money for holding the lamp to do the aarti on your own and not just watch it.
To get the desired career breakthroughs, you too need to always be selling. Your work cannot speak for itself. If it ever did the workers on the street would have been the richest. Showcase your work. Talk about its impact. Master your stories. Keep narrating them often. Sell! Sell! And keep selling more.
#5–Emotions make you pay
People who had come over, bought flowers, tickets for the pooja/donation or for holding the aarti lamp. I realized that they primarily did it out of emotional reasons. Doing so gave them their high.
To get the desired career breakthroughs, you too need to evoke the emotions of the people you are solving problems for. The world is full of problems. People are ready to pay an enormous amount to solve their problems. What problems can you solve–is the question you need to ask yourself. Remember the bigger problem you solve the higher you get paid, and even higher if the solution makes them feel good emotionally.
#6–Give the world a mesmerizing experience
Everyone and by that, I mean every single person present there had had a mesmerizing experience. Everyone was pleased and walked out with a feeling of contentment. Everyone was talking about the best time spent here. It was a wonderful feeling.
To get the desired career breakthroughs, you too need to give the world around you a mesmerizing experience. Everyone must vouch of you. Be it your boss, your colleagues or your juniors. You need to have an influence on all. Everyone should talk good about you. Influence happens to the single most important factor for leadership and career success.
#7–The mesmerizing aarti happens here every morning and evening
Every morning and evening the scenario is similar. Enormous crowd flocks at the ghat to experience this epic event of the Ganga Aarti. And the priests ensure that it is a mesmerizing experience repeatedly.
To get the desired career breakthroughs, you too need to show up every day. Consistency is the name of the game. You cannot be doing exceptional work just once. It is not episodic. But it is important that you do it regularly. Same with influence. Many people think influence is once a blue moon affair. No, it is not. You need to continually work towards influencing people around you.
Trust you have had a mesmerizing experience reading and learning from my thoughts. Har Har Gange!
